The small cylindrical thing taped to the motor body is a reed switch. It
was originally mounted close to the treadmill roller, and was used to
deliver walking speed information to the console. Here I've taped a
small magnet to the shaft. I stayed out of the way while it was running,
but it never gave any sign of coming off.
