The "bridge" (as I've been calling it) that actually supports the
bandsaw is made from two 2x6 pieces of douglas fir. (Anything much
wider than a 2x6 would have eventually interfered with clearance for
the bandsaw's drive belt.) I cut them, then drilled, glued, and
screwed them tightly together.
Sadly there was a slight twist to the bridge when I was finished, and it
needed a couple of thin shims at two corners.
Tip: Next time I might try harder to find an appropriate piece of
well-seasoned scrapwood -- an old hardwood 4x4, or something like
that. My 6 foot length of 2x6 douglas fir cost $35!
